Sgt James M. Lackey


     James M. Lackey was the son of Rev Samuel J. Lackey (a Primitive Baptist Minister), the great grandson of John Lackey of Patrick County, Virginia (a Revolutionary Patriot) and the great uncle of Football Hall of Fame, Earl H. "Dutch" Clark of Pueblo, Colorado. The family roots run deep into virginia with Lackeys being Dresent since 1772 and in North Carolina since 1835.

     James M. Lackey was born March 25. 1840 to Rev Samuel J. Lackey and Drucilla Corn Lackey in Stokes Co., North Carolina. As a young child, he attended the schools of the area, helped his father farm tobacco and most likely attended to church duties of the Graham's, State Line and Liberty churches with his father.

     During the War for Southern Independence, James was conscripted July 25, 1862 at Camp Holmes by Col. Mallett into the 21st North Carolina Infantry Co L, rose to the rank of sergeant and was present at Appomattox Court House when General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Lieutenant General Grant. An interesting fact is that his brother. Henry C. Lackey and James M Lackey were fighting at the same time during the Battle of Gettysburg. However, Henry was captured July l, 1863 and then later released in 1865. Both men survived the War.

     James M. Lackey then returned to Stokes Co, North Carolina and took up the trade of tobacco and waggoner. On December 7, 1871. James married Mary Ellen Trent in Martinsville, Patrick Co. Virginia. They raised their lamily in Stokes County, NC for29 years. In 1884, his father, Rev Samuel J. Lackey, and mother sold their property and moved to Deer Trail, Arapaho Co., Colorado, along with several of their married children. They were George J. Lackey and wife Sarah (grandparents of EARL H. "Dutch" Clark) of Rocky Ford, Gideon L. and Ruth E. Lackey Bunon of Deer Trail and Robert Lackey and wife Mattie of Colorado Springs. James M. Lackey moved to Pueblo about 1890 and worked for The Colorado Fuel and lron Company until his death on August 31, 1916. He was buried September 2, 1916, at Mountain View Cemetery in Pueblo.
